Priced at just £1.05, the confectionery treat is cooked in filo pastry rather than the traditional chip-shop batter and served with an unknown sauce.

Despite the rest of the menu providing calorie information for each dish, there is no figure beside the Mars bar.

Out-going Labour leader Jim Murphy tweeted the special addition to the chip-shop themed menu describing it as a "healthy option".

The Scottish Parliament confirmed the caterers at Holyrood did have a Mars bar on the menu but it was not deep fried.

A spokeswoman added: "The menu is chosen by Sodexo, the company contracted to provide catering services at Holyrood."

The menu is an attempt to make the dish healthy after recommendations in Holyrood's Scottish National Food and Drink Policy published in June 2009.
