Helmet and seat belt rule will be made mandatory in the district from July 1, Kadapa Superintendent of Police Navin Gulati has said.

At a meeting here recently, the SP instructed the police officials to ensure that all two-wheeler riders wore helmets and those driving cars and other four-wheelers tied seat belts.

Any violation of the directive will attract fine as per the rules, he said and insisted that an awareness drive be undertaken among the vehicle owners before the new rule came into force.

Referring to road accidents, the SP said that First Information Reports in such cases should mandatorily have the drivers’ names and those caught driving without licences must be prosecuted. The names of drivers must not be altered in order to claim insurance in accident cases, he said.

Expressing concern over the drunk driving, Mr. Gulati said that the violators would attract a fine of Rs. 3,000, apart from imprisonment depending on the cases. Forty drivers have been fined and got jail in drunk driving cases so far. Long-distance transport vehicles should have two drivers each, he said.
The SP asked police officials to take steps to check liquor sale and its consumption in dhabas abutting highways.
